With the prominent location of the site, within close proximity of the center of downtown Philadelphia, the project offered a challenging and unique brief to replace the crumbling warehouse situated in the heart of this courtyard block with a new residential building.
"Upgrading existing built fabric to create revitalized urban density."
In order to reimagine the future of Mifflin Street, the project brings together the two typologies, the townhouse and courtyard building which make up much of the eclectic context, and combine them into a hybrid model to breath new life into the interior of this rundown block.
Urban renewal
The new building emphasizes quality outdoor space for its residents. The stepped terraces of each townhouse allow for natural light to penetrate into the raised courtyard, which serves as a shared garden for the residents to enjoy.
As a catalyst for urban renewal, the interior of this inner city block becomes a vibrant and green model of affordable housing. Upgrading the existing built fabric to create revitalized urban density.
We can rethink the lifecycle of existing structures through re-use and robust design solutions.
