From ashes to elegance - House Oakburn was a unique project that was brought about through tragic circumstances. This quaint old family home was subject to a horrible fire, leaving little more than a few walls and structure standing. This disaster had one silver lining, allowing the site to showcase a house worthy of its beauty.
The project was very hands on due to the urgency to be completed. From the very beginning a small dedicated team, were able to push the project from concept to completion with seamless remote collaboration.
Situated in the beautiful area of Llandudno, Cape Town, the house did not provide an entirely blank canvas, as due to the low budget, some of the key structural elements were to be retained.
Creatively utilizing what was left, it was possible to transform this traditional family home into a new contemporary design.
An open plan was a key to the space, allowing the volumes to open up to the landscape, transcending the barriers between internal and external, embracing the climate of almost all year round outdoor life.
The functional breakdown of this 400 square meter home, was divided into 2 distinct zones, allowing a clear flow of all daily living activities, separated from the sleeping
and private zones.
The design took inspiration from the wreckage of the burnt site, dark framing and detail elements, counter balancing the tranquil white spaces created, providing the perfect canvas for the family to re-celebrate their home.
